Posted on July 25th, 2018Have you ever been overwhelmed running your own massage business? Have you been frustrated asking yourself WHERE ARE THE CALLS??? I certainly had these experiences in my successful career as a gay massage therapist.
Being your own boss is exhilarating! There’s no one else to answer to. You’re in full control of your business, and you have the professional freedom you’ve always dreamed of. But it’s important to exert that same control over your life. If you aren’t careful, your business can overtake your personal affairs.
Let me share a few tips on how to run a stress free and fulfilling massage business.
- Remember to work on yourself - When you’re in charge, you’re responsible for everything from booking your appointments to paying your bills. It can be difficult to know when to pause. Carve out some time for yourself with a meditation session, a workout, a good book or some time with friends. Never neglect yourself for your business.

Treat your customers well - Not every customer will be pleasant or tip well. Whether you like them or not, ALWAYS treat them like royalty. Great service leads to repeat customers and additional referrals—two things that can make or break your business.

Plan Your Day - On days that you’re booked consistently, filling up an 8-hour work day is no problem. But on the slower days, don’t think you can sleep in and wait around for clients to contact you. Check your ads, refine your skills, follow up, and balance your books. There’s always something to do. When you are done with improving your business tell yourself when to stop. The funny thing I've learned from my days in massage industry: As soon as you stop waiting for them, they start calling.

Learn to Say No - As a masseur, people will approach you often with new opportunities. You’ll feel compelled to say yes every time. However, first consider if the opportunity benefits you and your business. If it does, proceed. If not, don’t be afraid to say no. Once I had this customer who's 2 hours away requesting an appointment. He wanted me to come there, which is 4 hours drive total. I didn't have any appointments booked for the day so I decided to go. Once I got there all my regular clients just started calling for the last minute appointment. Of course it was too late for me to change my mind. Result: I could make $800 but instead I made $300. Still I gave this guy the best massage ever and he visited my massage studio many times after.
While it’s a great feeling to be in the driver’s seat of your career, know that it’s hard work. Keep a focus on balance, productivity and mindfulness to run the best massage business you can.
